A los 75 años murió en un hospital de Nueva York Jimmy Sabater, intérprete de importantes temas de reconocimiento internacional como "Volare" y "Bomba Carambomba". Fue uno de los precursores de la salsa y de los más notables timbaleros y cantantes del género.
El músico venía presentando complicaciones de salud en los últimos meses.
A través de su cuenta en Twitter @Faniamusic , el grupo musical escribió: "Estamos recibiendo informes de la muerte de nuestro gran amigo y artista Jimmy Sabater. Es una gran tristeza que tenemos".
Sabater, nacido el 11 de abril de 1936, inició muy joven su carrera artística. En la década de los 50`s hizo parte del Sexteto de Joe Cuba en el que cantaba junto al maestro Cheo Feliciano.
A lo largo de los años 1970 y 1980, también tuvo una importante carrera como solista, lanzando los álbumes clásicos "La voz aterciopelada de Jimmy Sabater", "El Hijo de Teresa" y "Solo". En 1977, Jimmy Sabater dejó el Sexteto de Joe Cuba.
El 12 de noviembre de 1997 Jimmy Sabater ganó el premio de la Ciudad de Nueva York por su contribución a la calidad de vida en la ciudad. También recibió el reconocimiento "Músico Destacado del Año".
En 1998 se convirtió en el vocalista principal de la América Sexteto "Son Boricua", dirigido por el Maestro José Mangual Jr. Su primer álbum, llamado "Son Boricua" fue el ganador del prestigioso premio ACE como mejor nueva versión latina de este año.
